Ahn Jung Geun was a Korean independence activist and nationalist hero. He was born on September 2, 1879 in Haeju, Korea (now in North Korea) and was executed on March 26, 1910 in China.
Ahn Jung Geun is best known for his assassination of Hirobumi Ito, the Japanese Resident-General of Korea, in 1909. Ito was a prominent Japanese political figure who played a key role in the annexation of Korea by Japan in 1910. Ahn Jung Geun believed that by assassinating Ito, he could prevent the annexation and gain independence for Korea.
After carrying out the assassination, Ahn Jung Geun was captured by Japanese authorities and sentenced to death. He was executed in China, where the assassination took place.
